Splitting Service Included
Need a thinner leather? We provide complimentary splitting down to 0.7 mm (1.7
oz.). Simply add your thickness request in the notes, and the service will be
included at no extra cost. Using industrial-grade splitting machines, we
process full hides with high precision—without cutting them into smaller
panels—ensuring consistent results. Please note that splitting is not available
for leftovers, scraps, or strips, and customized split leather is
non-returnable.
What is Split Leather?
Split leather is produced by separating the lower fibrous
layer from a thicker hide, leaving it without the natural grain surface. While
it is generally considered less premium than full-grain leather, it offers
excellent value, consistent structure, and practical performance for many
industrial and commercial applications. Its cost-effectiveness and versatile
finishing options make split leather a widely utilized material across multiple
product categories.
Split Vs Grain Leather:
Each skin has in its section two parts from which two
products are obtained and therefore two possibilities of use. The part that is
on the external surface of the dermis is the most valuable part and is called
"grain leather"; the innermost part, obtained by splitting the
leather, on the other hand, is called "split leather" and is still
very well usable.
Split Leather of Sheepskin and Goatskin:
Sheep and goat hides are particularly well suited for
producing suede or velour finishes. To achieve maximum softness and a refined
garment feel, the top grain is typically removed—yielding what is known as
“skiver”—while the remaining inner layer without the grain becomes the primary
material. Skins from goats, sheep (including rams and lambs), and crossbreeds
such as hair sheep are widely valued for delivering excellent suede quality
with a soft, uniform texture.
Cow Split Leather:
Cowhide typically offers substantial thickness, allowing the
grain layer to be preserved while still producing a valuable split. The rump or
butt section of the split retains the highest quality and usability, whereas
shoulder and belly areas are generally considered lower-grade recovery
material. Cow split leather is widely used for manufacturing split suede (often
referred to as velour), where specialized tanning processes enhance its natural
strength, softness, and performance—similar in principle to the treatment of
chamois-finished garment sheepskins.
Applications of Split Leather
Split leather is widely used in the manufacture of leather
goods such as bags, footwear, and accessories. Beyond the classic suede or
velour finish, split hides can undergo additional treatments that expand their
applications. Through pigment finishing or the application of a thin polymer
layer, split leather can be engineered to resemble top-grain leather. These
materials are commonly known as bicast (or bycast) leather and are still
classified as genuine leather because the base material remains real hide.
Bicast splits are especially popular in the belt and fashion accessories
industries due to their uniform appearance and cost efficiency.
Calf Split Leather:
Calf split leather is often regarded as the most refined
among split types, prized for its silky hand feel and exceptionally soft, fine
texture. These qualities make it especially suitable for high-quality footwear
and premium bags. Its main limitation is the relatively lower thickness
achievable, as the material is derived from a non-adult animal, which naturally
produces a lighter and thinner split.
